One place, several spellings
Seffarine, Saffarin and as-Saffarin are spellings you may encounter for this historic Fez hammam. The name relates to the metalworking quarter and square. Recognising the variants helps connect research, maps and French or English descriptions without imagining several different bathhouses.
The Moroccan Ministry of Habous identifies the hammam with the Marinid period. Architectural research published in 2008 also places it in the historic fabric of the Fez medina. These sources establish a historical context; the age of the wider city should not be substituted for the building's own chronology.
A working building within a larger quarter
Raftani and Radoine describe the connection with the craftspeople of Seffarine square. That relationship helps explain why a hammam belongs to the daily life of its surrounding streets, rather than standing alone like an exhibition object.
Their study draws attention to a richly decorated changing or resting room, including plaster, tilework and wood. The same research examines washing rooms and the furnace. The decorative space is one part of an operating system, not a complete definition of the bath.
What the restoration record says
An official ministry report dated 17 April 2019 discusses Seffarine's restoration within the rehabilitation of the Fez medina. It records a public heritage intervention and identifies the Marinid connection. It should be read as a dated restoration record, not as a current booking announcement.
UNESCO inscribed the Medina of Fez in 1981. That is the designation of the medina as a whole. Calling every individual building a separately inscribed UNESCO monument would go beyond what that listing establishes.
How to use this history
Read Seffarine alongside Aghmat and Mouassine to compare different periods and settings. Look for the relationship between the entrance, resting room, bathing spaces and service areas. Be explicit about whether a photograph or plan predates restoration.
For a visit, independently check current access, rules and operation with the responsible establishment. No appointment, admission price or opening schedule for Seffarine is offered by this article. The cultural account and the services currently sold on Morocco Hammam are separate.
